Sherman
Alexie has accomplished much for not having expected to live past his surgery
at only six months old (“A Reservation of the
Mind”). With a talent for writing, Alexie can truly bring out
the raw emotions in his audiences. Living a life consumed with poverty,
substance abuse, and facing adversity, Alexie prevailed to a life of success
and status. It took with a personal stint with alcohol for Alexie, to reveal
that he needed to abstain from it in order to succeed. His work encompasses the
struggles Native American families face and how they are looked down upon.
Through the use of his humor, he masks the emotions of pain and tragedy he has
had to face. Every writer has a way of coping or figuring out the world. A
person who has been through all of his ordeals would not normally find humor in
such things. Still, Alexie is able to get past those difficult times and look
on the bright side. All of his experiences have shaped him into the person who
he is today. Sherman Alexie in no way, shape or form is trying to disrespect
his culture by putting out their lives for public display. Rather he is using his writing to bring awareness to
it.
